Social nosing between sow and piglets is common in free-farrowing pens and deserves further research to understand its positive implications for sow and piglet welfare. This study used a mixed model to analyse the frequency of sow-piglet nosing behaviours in 22 litters. Results showed that the sow-piglet nose contact was unrelated to the sow parity, week of lactation, or piglet sex and teat order, but did show significant within-litter variation. This variation could be due to varying mothering abilities between sows in the same litter. On average, piglets initiated nose contact with their mothers 3.6 times per 30 min of observations. This was higher than reported in studies by Stangel and Jensen, and Blackshaw and Hagelso.
